RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. – William Smith’s Trendi pulled off the upset of the year at 44-1 odds by handing number-one-ranked Kiss My Hocks his first defeat in the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity Sunday afternoon at Ruidoso Downs.
Trendi defeated Kiss My Hocks by a neck and it was another neck back to third-place finisher Eagle On The Fly.

The Larry Gamez-ridden Trendi covered the 400 yards in 19.525 seconds.

Trendi got off to a quick start. “Then she hit a slick spot and I had to pick her up,” said jockey Larry Gamez. “She came a running at the end. I knew that I had it won.

“That was a big win, now it’s on to the All American (Futurity).” Trials to the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity will be Aug. 14-15 at Ruidoso Downs.

RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. – Ellen Kennedy Living Trust’s homebred Houdini broke through with his first stakes win when he rallied on the outside to take the Grade 1, $1,048,682 Rainbow Derby on Saturday at Ruidoso Downs.

Houdini had been second in the Grade 1, $1 million Texas Classic Futurity, second in the $720,000 Remington Park Oklahoma-bred Futurity, second in the $50,000 Jack Brooks Stakes, third in the Grade 1, $200,000 Southwest Juvenile Championship and had a very troubled trip in the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity.

But, that’s all in the past now after scoring the Rainbow Derby victory.

“He’s not a bridesmaid anymore. He always ran good races, but never quite got the job done,” said winning rider Cody Jensen, who has now won five of the last nine Rainbow derbies. “This has been a very nice race for me.”

Just find the winner

Ty-pic-smallThere’s a winner in every race. You just gotta find ‘em.

That shapes up as an especially tough task in the Grade 1, $1,048,274 Rainbow Derby at Ruidoso Downs July 19. Find the winner and you find wagering value. It is one the deepest and strongest races in recent memory.

Consider: An argument can be made for just about every horse in the race to stand in the winner’s circle. The favorite’s role is also a subject of discussion, however could well fall to Reliance Ranches’ Ruidoso Derby winner Rock You. He has a derby win over the track and then there is the assumption that the wagering public will be forgiving when they see his second-place Rainbow Derby trial run and overlook his sole defeat in his latest six starts.

RUIDOSO DOWNS, N.M. – Conda Maze and Tyler Graham’s Kiss My Hocks will be the strong favorite to take a big step towards the $4 million All American Triple Crown Bonus when he stands out in the Grade 1, $900,000 Rainbow Futurity July 20 at Ruidoso Downs.

The All American Triple Crown Bonus, the largest in quarter horse racing, has never been awarded. It would go to the connections of any horse who can win the Ruidoso Futurity, Rainbow Futurity and the All American Futurity. Kiss My Hocks has already won the Grade 1, $700,000 Ruidoso Futurity and is the horse to beat in the Rainbow Futurity. As the number-one two-year-old in the weekly AQHA Racing-Horseplayernow.com national poll, he must be considered the leading prospect for the Grade 1, $2.6 million All American Futurity.

If Kiss My Hocks sweeps the three futurities and takes the bonus, his total earnings this summer at Ruidoso Downs would approach $6 million. He earned $227,380 before he made his first Ruidoso Downs’ start.
